Shots Fired in Northwest Bexar County Standoff

Bexar County Sheriff's Deputies engaged in a violent standoff overnight in the rural northwest part of the county, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Sheriff Javier Salazar says deputies were called to the home on Saddle Trail Drive, which is off Boerne Stage Rd in Leon Springs, for a report of 'shots fired.'

"Deputies from our mental health unit were here at this location executing a mental health warrant and also conducting a welfare check on an elderly woman who lives inside the house," Salazar said.  "They went to the house, the deputies were equipped with tactical equipment, they had vests, helmets and a shield.  As they made their way into the residents, somebody within the residence fired one shot that hit their tactical shield."

They were able to retreat and no deputies were hurt in this exchange.

Salazar says a 62 year old man and an 80 year old woman live in the house.  Officials aren't sure whether one of them, or somebody else in the house fired the shot at the deputies.

Later in the evening, a man came outside and fired several shots at the deputies.  A later attempt to enter the house resulted in an exchange of gunfire, and two deputies suffered minor wounds.
