Suspect Surrenders in Standoff That Closed I-35

A three hour standoff that blocked both lanes of I-35 at Schwab Road in Schertz overnight came to an end early today with a suspect in custody, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

New Braunfels Police say it began when a man attempted to rob the Lowe's in the 1400 block of I-35 South, fought with employees, and then sped off.

Police gave chase northbound on I-35, then the suspect turned southbound and police put out spike strips, puncturing at least one of the tires on the fugitive's Ford Taurus.

The suspect's car finally came to rest against a concrete barrier at Schwab Road, but the suspect refused to leave the car and started ranting about how he had a 'gun' and was going to 'shoot police officers.'

A SWAT Team was called in, the highway was closed, and finally, after three hours, the suspect surrendered peacefully.

Ruben Ramirez, Jr, 46, was charges with Aggravated Robbery, Evading Arrest with a Vehicle and Resisting Arrest.

He is hospitalized for treatment of non life threatening injuries and will be formally booked later today.
