SAPD Investigates In-Custody Death of Arrested Panhandler

San Antonio Police are investigating the death of a panhandler in the back seat of a police car, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Police say an officer arrested the 62 year old man for panhandling near the intersection of Eisenhower and I-35 late Monday afternoon.

When the man was being driving to the County Jail for booking, the officer discovered he had 'slumped over' and was not responding to questions.

The trip to the Jail took a detour as the officer rushed the panhandler to North East Baptist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police stress the panhandler did not offer any resistance, and the officer did not use any force in making the arrest.

Because the man was in police custody, SAPD homicide detectives will investigate this as an 'in custody death.'  The Medical Examiner is currently conducting an autopsy to determine the man's cause of death.
