San Antonio Officially Named 'Music Friendly Community"

San Antonio today was officially designated as a 'Music Friendly Community by the Texs Music Office, the fourth city in the state to receive the designation, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

As the local art-rock band the Buttercups provided backup, Mayor Nirenberg praised the honor.

"What I love about this designation is the no one will ever have to ask about San Antonio's music heritage and the support of this community for our music industry," he said.

The other designated Music Friendly Communities are Austin, Ft. Worth, and Denton. From eighties crooner Christopher Cross to Tejano superstar Little Joe, Nirenberg cited the musicians who have been produced by San Antonio, and mentioned a long line of young musicians in the city who are prepared to join their ranks, led by the Mariachi Del Oro, Sebastian De la Cruz.

"San Antonio will be known as a city of music, and the Music Friendly Community designation is proof positive of that," Nirenberg said.

The recognition celebrates San Antonio current and future support for a wide diversity of music.  It requires that the city establish an official City Music Office, Demonstrate partnerships with music-related 501(c)3 non profits, and collaborate with music education programs, including college or university music schools.
