Police Defuse Northwest Side Standoff

Police today quietly ended a standoff on the city's northwest side today by allowing a man to walk out of a home where he had held an ex girlfriend against her will, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Police Chief Bill McManus says the woman called her work about 9AM and told them about the situation, and a friend at work notified the police.

McManus says the man, 30, didn't harm the woman, and he was not armed.

"He decided he was going to leave, and the officer on the scene decided that was the best course of action, to let him go."

McManus praised the decision to let him leave.  He says officers will decide whether to file charges later on.

"We know his name and we can file on him later."

He said.He said nobody was hurt.  He said officers were afraid that the man may attempt what is called 'suicide by cop,' which is when a person commits a violent crime in hopes that police will shoot him.

McManus said the suspect will face charges of 'unlawful restraint' and will be arrested later.
