San Antonio Added 38,000 Jobs in 2017

Metro San Antonio saw its unemployment rate fall to a historic low of 3.0% over the course of 2017, despite the fact that the area added 31,000 new people to the work force, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

The reason: the region added 38,000 new jobs in 2017, an extraordinary job growth figure over the course of one year.

There are now 1,139,100 people working full time in metro San Antonio, an all time record high.

The Texas Workforce Commission reports job growth in ten of the eleven sectors in the fourth quarter of 2017, with construction, information, and leisure and hospitality seeing the strongest gains.

"Texas ended 2017 with record-level job creation numbers during the fourth quarter, with 10 of 11 industries expanding over the year and an annual gain of 306,900 jobs," said Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Chairman Andres Alcantar.

"TWC looks forward to another year of strong partnerships with innovative Texas employers as they continue to create valuable opportunities for the Texas workforce and contribute to our state's economic success."

The lowest unemployment rate in the state is in the Midland area, with 2.5% unemployment.

Economists generally peg any unemployment under 4.0% as 'full employment,' due to the natural churn in the economy, with people being between jobs, on sabbaticals or FMLA or other leaves.

The statewide unemployment rate in December was 3.9%.
