The City is planning to brighten up downtown and select neighborhoods with 30,000 LED streetlights, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
City Chief Financial Officer Ben Gorzell says LED lighting will be more cost effective and more environmentally friendly than existing incandescent street lights.
"They have dimming capability, sensors that can make the lighting get brighter if there is any activity in the area," Gorzell said.
The new lighting will be a partnership between the City and CPS Energy.
Gorzell says the LED lights will also send a 'message' when a bulb burns out.
"Right now we rely a lot on people calling in and saying 'my street light is burned out can you come fix it'," Gorzell said. "Having the ability to have an automatic sensor that will notify CPS so they can send a crew out and get that bulb replaced."
Supporters say in addition to being cost efficient, the new LED streetlights will provide more thorough lighting for the streets, making downtown and the other neighborhoods where it is installed safer and more pedestrian-friendly.
