Temps Remain Below Freezing, Ice Concerns Remain for City

This morning's ice snap is blamed for 49 traffic accidents, knocked out electric power to 1,380 customers, and resulted in two people being treated for frostbite, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Numerous roads, mainly ramps, bridges, and fly-overs, had to be closed when the icy precipitation was falling, so TxDOT could treat them with a de-icing chemical.

Josh Donat of Tx-DOT says it was nice that, unlike the December snowstorm, this icy blast was forecast, it still hit very quickly.

"It hit us all at once, it didn't come in gradual," he said.  "We went from no problems on the roadway to quite a few problems on the roadway in about a half hour."

He says unlike the days when the 'Ice Plan' was implemented, and the entire freeway system would be shut down during ice periods, the new de-icing chemicals can treat areas where ice occurs, like on flyovers and bridges.

"That brine has a solution of about 23% salt in it, and it lowers the freezing temperature for water down to about zero degrees or a shade under zero degrees Farenheit."

The Airport has also begun to recover.  After losing about two thirds of its morning flights to cancellation, a significantly larger number of flights are working this afternoon.

With the temperature not expected to rise above freezing for the rest of Tuesday, the National Weather Service warned in an advisory that some of the precipitation will remain on roads and bridges as ice, and could cause continued trouble into Wednesday.

The National Weather Service says the Winter Storm Warning will remain in place until late Tuesday.

Donat says the fact that much of the precipitation has moved out of the area will help make the Wednesday morning commute a lot smoother.

"That wind will actually help us, it will drive the precipitation off the roadway for us," he said.  "If you don't have any wanter on the road, you can't have any ice."
