Local conservative blogger George Rodriguez today filed a formal complaint with the Texas Attorney General's Office over the decision of the Police Chief to release 12 illegal immigrants found in an 18 wheeler on the northeast side last month, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
The A.G.'s office said after the incident that it stood ready to investigate the SAPD's actions if a complaint were filed.
Rodriguez says the decision of Police Chief William McManus to release the 12 without any formal vetting to make sure they weren't terrorists or cartel members placed him and the entire community at risk.
The Attorney General could determine that SB-4, the law forbidding the creation of 'Sanctuary Cities' was violated when McManus 'waved off' Immigration and Customs Enforcement and made the decision himself to release the immigrants.
The San Antonio Police Officers Association has called on Mayor Nirenberg to place McManus on Administrative leave while the incident is investigated, saying that would remove the possibility of favoratism.
The SAPOA accused McManus of confusing 'human trafficking' and 'human smuggling' when he described the 12 immigrants as 'victims.' President Mike Helle says in human smuggling, which this case was under state law, the individuals being smuggled are not 'victims' because they in fact instigated the crime by paying to be smuggled.
