Hard Freeze Warning Remains in Place, But Worst of the Cold is Over

The hard freeze warning remains in place for the entire region this morning, as low temperatures in the lower twenties in the city, and in the upper teens in the Hill Country, are the lowest we have seen since the current cold snap began last weekend, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

The National Weather Service says the mercury went below freezing at 8:15PM on December 31, and didn't rise above the freezing mark until 11:15 AM on Tuesday.

That is 39 and 1/2 hours of consistently below freezing temperatures, the first time that has been reported in San Antonio since February of 2011.

The National Weather Service says despite the cold, the Winter Weather Advisory has been allowed to expire, as sleet and freezing rain have moved out of the area.  That doesn't mean the roads are ice free.  Standard overnight freezing could cause bridges and overpasses to ice up, and a wreck on Old Pearsall Road early Wednesday was blamed on patches of ice on the road.

There is hope in the forecast.  This afternoon we'll see the sun again, and temperatures in the middle 50s.

While it will be chilly tonight, we should barely break freezing with a low of 31 degrees, and that should be it for the freezing weather.  By Friday the early morning low will be in the forties, and we'll see highs back into the middle sixties by the weekend.
