Gas prices in San Antonio are beginning the new year the highest they have been since January 2 of 2014, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
GasBuddy.com reports the average price in San Antonio today is $2.16, up 7.7 cents just in the past week.
That compares with an average of $2.09 on January 2 of 2017, and $1.70 to begin 2016."It's mostly a happy New Year as gas prices remain in the low-to-mid $2 per gallon range, but it's not quite as happy as could be as it's the priciest start to a New Year since 2014," said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. "2017 wrapped up a fairly tame year, but keep in mind oil prices are among the highest we've witnessed in over two years, and we're in the middle of a severe cold snap, one which is likely to drive up demand for heating oil, propane and other petroleum products, which is certainly a bullish start to the year."
In addition to the nationwide cold snap, the growing unrest in Iran is sparking increases in crude oil prices, which will translate into even higher pump prices in the coming week or so.
Posted gas prices under $2.00, which had become a routine sight around San Antonio over the past several weeks, have pretty much vanished as the prices have been rising. But San Antonio's prices remain the lowest in Texas. In Corpus Christi, for example, they're paying $2.23 a gallon today, and Laredo has an average price of $2.24.The nationwide average today is $2.48, which is also up sharply in the past several weeks.
