Former Congressman Canseco Leading in 21st District Congress Race

Former 23rd District Republican Congressman Quico Canseco is the early favorite to return to Washington as the Representative from the 21st District, according to a poll released today.

The survey, taken by Alabama based Cygnal Polling, shows Canseco with a strong lead in a crowded field of candidates who want to succeed the retiring Lamar Smith in the overwhelmingly Republican district.

Canseco pulls down about 22% support.  Second with 14% is former Hill County State Representative Harvey Hilderbran, followed by Boerne businessman Matt McCall, who lost to Smith in 2016, with 10%.

The pollsters say Canseco leads largely due to name recognition.  His ‘never heard of’ number in the district is only 37%, compared with other candidates with name recognition under 50%.

The poll was released today, which is the final day to file for a place on the ballot in the 2018 elections.

One thing is certain..they love President Trump in the 21st District.  The President receives 73% favorability ratings in the district, according to the poll.

Canseco served one term in Congress from the 23rd District before he lost to Pete Gallego in 2012.
