Pledge Death Prompts Suspension of Fraternity, Sorority Activities at TSU

Texas State University President Denise Trauth has frozen all fraternity and sorority activities on campus indefinitely, following the death of a Phi Kappa Psi fraternity pledge at an off campus apartment early Monday, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

TSU police found Matthew Ellis, 20,unresponsive in a San Marcos apartment, and he was pronounced dead after EMS personnel were unable to revive him.  Officials say the victim died after a fraternity initiation.

"As a result of this tragedy, I have suspended activities of all Greek fraternity and sorority chapters at Texas State," Trauth said in a statement.  

"These chapters are prohibited from holding new member events, chapter meetings, social functions, and philanthropic activities until a thorough review of the Greek Affairs system is completed."Trauth said.

 TSU's Vice President for Student Affairs has been ordered to immediately 'initiate this review and propose recommendations for reinstating fraternity and sorority chapters that demonstrate a commitment to the core values of Texas State, and the ideals established by their respective national organizations.'
