The first wife of the Sutherland Springs church gunman is speaking out, telling 'Inside Edition' about the man's sick personality.
"He just had a lot of demons and hatred inside of him," Tessa Brenneman, 25, told the program. The man beat, chocked, and kicked Tessa when he was an active duty Airman, and also pleaded guilty to intentionally fracturing his step son's skull.
He received a year in military prison and a bad conduct discharge which should have prevented him from legally acquiring the firearms used in the murders.
Brennaman recalls her first husband as a man who would fly into a rage at the most minor events, like a speeding ticket.
"He had a gun and a holster right here, and he took that gun and held it to my temple, and he said 'do you want to die? Do you want to die'," she said, choking back tears.
Senator John Cornyn says he will introduce a measure to mandate that all agencies report the names and personal information of people who, like this man, are ineligible to purchase firearms due to a conviction, mental illness, or other reason, and provide a penalty for failing to comply.
The Air Force concedes it failed to report this man to the FBI's background check service, allowing him to legally purchase the weapons he used in the November 5 attack, that killed 26 people.
