Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn says there may be bipartisan consensus on fixing the background check system on firearms. In a Capitol briefing today, Cornyn talked about Sunday's deadly mass shooting in his home state. He said background checks should help keep guns out of the hands of convicted felons, people with mental illnesses and those who commit domestic violence. The Air Force failed to enter Devin Patrick Kelley's 2012 domestic violence conviction into the National Crime Information Center. That may have prevented him from buying firearms before he killed 26 people at a church in Sutherland Springs.
