Sessions to Push Administration Immigration Priorities During Austin Stop

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions will be making an appearance in Austin today, where he will discuss the Trump Administration's policies for carrying out immigration priorities, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Much of the talk has been about the future of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which has allowed people who came to the U.S. as children with the illegal immigration parents to be allowed to remain legally in the U.S., although not to receive any benefits or a path to citizenship.

Sen. John Cornyn told 1200 WOAI news he hopes Sessions clarifies that there will be a way for these people to remain in the country.

"I do believe there is a negotiated resolution of the uncertainty of their status, if we can assure the American people that we have taken concrete steps of secure the border," Cornyn said.

Sessions is also expected to discuss President Trump's demands for extending DACA, including funding for a border wall, more technology to stop immigrant smuggling, and a program to decrease legal immigration and make all legal immigration based more on the skills of the immigrant, and less on family connections.

"This is something short of what I would call 'comprehensive immigration reform' but it does represent a significant step, I think, in the right direction," Cornyn said.

Sessions is also expected to discuss the Trump Administration's proposals to secure the border, and the costs of that program moving forward.
