San Antonio is taking two steps backward as it attempts to lure more major league sports teams to the city, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
The San Antonio Stars announced in a statement late Thursday that it and the WNBA are 'in negotiations with a buyer who will purchase and relocate the San Antonio Stars.'
The team didn't say what the future home of the Stars might be, but Fox Sports indicates the buyer is interested in moving the team to Las Vegas.
The Spurs purchased the WNBA team in 2002, when it was the Silver Stars, and it started playing in 2003 in the AT&T Center.
"On behalf of Spurs Sports & Entertainment ownership, management, and staff, and we are all very thankful to the wonderful Stars fans, season ticket members and corporate partners who have supported the team over the past 15 years," the Stars said.
The Stars said the decision to put the team up for sale was an 'extremely difficult one.'
The most prominent former Stars player is Becky Hammon. The current San Antonio Spurs head coach retired from the Stars in 2014.
The news comes as San Antonio is struggling to attract a Major League Soccer team, and continues to be on the lookout for opportunities in the NFL.
