San Antonio's Freetail Brewing Company has won a gold medal at the American Beer Festival this past weekend in Denver, becoming the first San Antonio brewery ever to take home the gold at the event which is referred to as 'the Super Bowl of beer, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
Scott Metzger, the owner of the locally based micro-brewery, says the medal was in the 'Barrel Aged Beer' category, and was for the brew called La Muerta.
He points out that La Muerta is popular during the Dia de los Muertos celebrations.
"The timing's great," he said. "Considering it comes at a time when this year's release is just a few weeks away."
Metzger says the medal shows that Texas beers 'are for real.
'"Validating for us knowing that the things we are doing are appreciated, and we are on the right track," he said.
He's still trying to deal with the major victory for his small start up brewery.
"This sends a strong message to the state and the rest of the country that Texas beer is for real, and will keep coming."
