From Schooly McSchoolface High School to Communist Martyrs High, the North East ISD Board of Education will have plenty of choices in front of it tonight as it ponders a new name for Lee High School, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
The Board voted in August to rename the school, which was named after the Confederate general and one time San Antonio resident back in 1958 when it opened. Concerns had been raised that a leader of the pro slavery Confederacy was inappropriate in the 21st Century.
The Board is not expected to make a final decision on a new name because the name Lee will not be removed from the building until the end of the current school year. But the Board is expected to discuss the sort of name it wants, and possibly narrow down the ideas. The district has already said it wants a name that reflects 'an idea, not a name.'
When the NEISD asked for suggestions on what to rename the school, the district received some...lot of them. More than 1900 different ideas from more than 2400 people, most of them wildly inappropriate for a high school.
The new name is expected to be implemented at the end of the current school year, and one school board member has estimated that taxpayers may have to fork over $1 million to accomplish the name change, changing out everything from signage to scoreboards to athletic uniforms.
Among the public submissions unlikely to be chosen include: 'Adolf Hitler School of Tolerance and Understanding.' That is in a class with the Chairman Mao School of Genocide and Government Standardized Indoctrination Camp for Juveniles.
Many of the submissions are comments about what people think about renaming the school, including 'Snowflake High,' 'Easily Offended High' and 'School for Cowards.'Then there's Turd City High, Weedlord High, and Allah's Chosen School for Future Emirs.
