Google Fiber Won't Bundle TV in San Antonio

There have been indications for a long time that traditional television and the system of getting TV through cable has been on the rocks for some time, and now Google, in it's effort to roll out high speed Google Fiber internet service in San Antonio, has confirmed it, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Google says when the Google Fiber internet is rolled out in San Antonio, it will not include 'the traditional TV add on.'

Dating back to Rogers CableVision in the 1980s, through Time-Warner and AT&T U-verse, Internet service has been provided by the cable TV provider, and that is how Google Fiber has worked in other markets.

But, in a statement, Google says it will be trying a new paradigm in San Antonio.

"If you've been reading the business news lately, you know that more and more people are moving away from traditional methods of viewing television content," Google said.  "Customers today want to control what, where, when and how they get content.  They want to do it their way, and we want to help them."

Google says it will 'focus on providing superfast internet' in San Antonio, and the endless content possibilities that creates.

San Antonio and Louisville will be the first two Google Fiber markets with the stand alone Internet model.  The company says customers in other cities will continue to receive TV bundled with its Google Fiber.

Google says the future is streaming services like YouTube (which, not coincidentally, is owned by Google) as well as Netflix, Hulu and others

"Google Fiber's superfast Internet allows customers to make the most of all thses streaming choices by providing the bandwidth to use multiple devices and apps at the same time," the company said.

Google said Google Fiber will be up and running in San Antonio 'soon,' but didn't offer specifics.
