Columbus Day--Chris Gets No Respect

Columbus Day has become the 'Rodney Dangerfield of holidays.'  Like the late stand up comedian, it don't get no respect.

News Radio 1200 WOAI reports that Columbus Day is not a holiday for either the City of San Antonio or Bexar County.  In fact, both will mark 'Indigenous People's Day' on Thursday, October 12, the traditional day of Columbus Day, and the date when the Italian-born explorer is said to have reached the West Indies in 1492.

Whether today is a school day depends on what side of the street you live on.

Students in the Northside and North East ISD's for example, can hit the snooze button, but for students in the San Antoinio ISD, it's class as usual.

Today remains a federal holiday, which means don't look for the mailman.

But today is not a Wall Street holiday, which means the stock market will be open as will most banks.

Also, look for the usual calls for taxpayers to overpay to remove the statue of Christopher Columbus which has stood at Columbus Park on the northwest edge of downtown since the 1920s, even though the state is not city property.

The statue is owned by the Christopher Columbus Italian Society, even though Columbus Park, the small pocket park off Martin Street, is a city park.

The cost of removing the Confederate monument in Travis Park this past summer turned out to be far more than the $150,000 City Council was told it would be, due largely to SAPD overtime needed to deal with various protests over the statue.
