Schilo's Marks its Centennial--in True German Style

There was no Riverwalk when 'Mama' and 'Papa' Schilo started Shilo's restaurant on East Commerce Street in 1917, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

But today there was German culture to spare, with oom-pah bands, to mark the 100th anniversary of what is now the oldest family owned restaurant in San Antonio.

Schilo's, which is know for its Reuben sandwiches and German cuisine, is also famous for this 'supercharged root beer' that the Schilos started serving up at the onset of Prohibition in the 1920s.

Tina Lyons, who is a member of the family that now co-owns the restaurant, says it takes something special to get a family owned independent restaurant to last a century in the era of chains.

"Faith that you are giving back to the community, and you are doing a service," she said.  "Hospitality is the key."

Several local officials were on hand today to celebrate Schilo's centennial.

So will Schilo's still be serving up Reuberns and root beer in 2117?

"Oh, my goodness, absolutely!"
