Mexico: If US Doesn't Want 'Dreamers,' We'll Gladly Take Them

Mexico's Ambassador to the U.S. tells News Radio 1200 WOAI that if the U.S. does deport the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, his country will love to have them back.

Geronimo Gutierrez told News Radio 1200 WOAI during a recent stop in San Antonio that the dreamers have been educated by the American taxpayer, and if the U.S. doesn't choose to take advantage of that education, Mexico will be glad to.

"These are young men and women who are hard working, entrepreneurs, who are doing great things," Gutierrez said.  "We would benefit from having them back in Mexico."

An estimated 80% of DACA recipients, known as 'Dreamers,' came to the U.S. with their illegal immigrant parents from Mexico and qualify for the program.  President Trump last month said he will 'phase out' DACA unless Congress moves to make it permanent.

While there has been talk of providing the 'Dreamers,' many of whom don't speak Spanish and have no memory of living anyplace else but the U.S., a pathway to citizenship, Congress, as is customary on immigration matters, has fallen to bickering and finger pointing and has taken no real action.

Gutierrez says Mexico is working with Congrss to try to come up with a solution, but he says if the 'Dreamers' do return to Mexico, there are programs being set up to integrate them.

"They do want to stay in the U.S. because they have grown up like any other child in America," he said.  "So I think they should have a chance to obtain the legal certainty that they have worked do hard for."
