San Antonians are getting good and creative when it comes to renaming Robert E. Lee High School, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
The North East ISD says it received no fewer than 2400 submissions in less than a week for a new name for the school.
But don't expect a lot of them to be taken seriously by the North East school board when it meets next week.
"Unfortunately, many of the 1,901 submissions that did not meet criteria contained offensive and inappropriate references, such as profanity and racially charged statements," District spokeswoman Aubrey Chancellor said.
The District had said it was looking for an 'idea, not a name' for the school, but most of the submissions by citizens are names, and some are not particularly pleasant.
Several people suggested that the school be named for Adolf Hitler, including the 'Adolf Hitler School of Tolerance and Understanding.' That is in a class with the Chairman Mao School of Genocide and Government Standardized Indoctrination Camp for Juveniles.
Many of the submissions are comments about what people think about renaming the school, including 'Snowflake High,' 'Easily Offended High' and 'School for Cowards.'
Then there's Turd City High, Weedlord High, and Allah's Chosen School for Future Emirs.
The idea of picking somebody else named 'Lee' to save money, suggested by Board member Sandy Wolff was also considered, with Harper Lee, Spike Lee, Stan Lee, Amy Freeman Lee, Tommy Lee, Lighthorse Harry Lee, and Bruce Lee all submitted.
There were suggestions to rename the school for local luminaries, including Tim Duncan, Gregg Popovich, Lila Cockrell, Scott Deem, Ivy Taylor, Richard Middleton, Ann Richards, David Robinson, and Kawhi Leonard.
There were suggestions that the school be renamed for Baba Booey, for Barack Obama, Robert Kennedy, John Wayne, Selena, Henry B. Gonzalez, and Davy Crockett. Also Donald Trump, Dwight Eisenhower, Julian Castro, Charles Manson, Neal Armstrong, Gen. Norman Schwartzkopf, Ulysses Grant, Colonel Sanders, Henry Cisneros, Jefferson Davis, Bernie Sanders, David Duke, and 'Green Light of the Deadnought.'
Also receiving voters are Challenger High School, Liberty High School, Freedom High School, the Exploration School, and the School of Pride. Suggestions include North East Early College Academy, Leadership Academy, International Studies Academy, Tricentennial High, and the Trans-Cultural Academy for Secondary Education.
Some people wants to preserve the Lee name in different ways. There is "Leaders Through Exemplary Education High' which would be referred to by its initials, LEE High. There is also Bobby Lee High School, General Lee High School, and R.E. Lee High School.
