The Texas Department of Transportation has unveiled its next step in improving Loop 1604, which involves widening the highway on the far southwest side, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
The plan involves expansion of 1604 between highway 90 and I-35 on the far west and southwest sides of the city.
"The proposed plan includes expanding Loop 1604 from a two lane rural roadway to a four lane divided roadway section, with shoulders and pedestrian accommodations within that right of way," spokeswoman Laura Lopez said.
She says the project will also include bridges over several major surface streets which now intersection with Loop 1604 at stop signs, as well as a bridge over the main Union Pacific tracks in the area.
She says this is the first step in a long term, multi phase project.
"We are still in the planning stages, environmental studies are being done at this time, so we are still in the early stages," she said. "We probably won't break ground until early 2022."
The growth in the eighties and nineties was on the far north side, with the fastest growing parts of the city in the 2000s and 2010s being on the northwest and far west regions, including the Alamo Ranch area.
Planners expect that the growth will continue to move, with the southwest side being the growth area in the coming decade, and TxDOT says these plans will prepare for that growth.
