A Big Question in Harvey Battered Coastal Bend--What to Do With the Debris

Call it, Mt. Aransas.

In Port Aransas, a giant pile of debris that has been pulled from the area where Hurricane Harvey hit one month ago, is now stacked high, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

The trash is a major issue in the area, as crews begin the recovery process. Drive down any street in the coastal town, and neighbors' belongings are mixed in with what were once their homes.

Beth Tatum, who heads the Coastal Bend Disaster Recovery Group, says it's a mess.

"There are massive stacks of tree limbs and building material along the roadways because that's where the trash contractors pick up," she tells Newsradio 1200 WOAI.

Most of the mess, she says, is building materials. Drywall that has been cut out. Metal roof pieces that were blown down. Carpet. Flooring.

"It's not ordinary household garbage and, obviously, it's going to be a whole lot more effort to go through and have it picked up," she explains.

For an area that's already gone through so much, she says there is a long way to go

.  The prediction is that it could take six months to clean up the debris in Port Aransas, Aransas Pass and Rockport.
