A former LaVernia High School math teacher, who resigned when he was busted by the feds, has been sentenced to jut about 12 years in federal prison on child pornography charges, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
"I have let everybody down and violated their trust and my oath as a teacher," Ted DeAubrey said this week in federal court.
The FBI had their eyes on the 58-year old as part of a sting operation. He was caught with more than 1,500 perverted pictures on his home computer, which were acquired using bit-torrent software that's more commonly known as a way to view pirated movies.
In court, DeAubrey's attorney argued for a lower sentence, saying his client was a teacher. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tracy Thompson countered that his profession comes with higher standards."He's supposed to be a confidant for children," she argued. "We teach our kids to go to teachers."
Outside the courtroom, defense attorney Shannon Locke made it clear. While his client admitted to collecting child pornography, he never had contact with a child.
"He took a polygraph and passed a polygraph, where he was asked if he acted out on any of these issues. He did not and he passed the polygraph."
That was confirmed by the school district, which says no students were victims, and district computers were not used to fuel his carnal lust.
DeAubrey was flanked in court by his wife. His two sons, one of whom is college-aged, were not present.
