Strait Today Tours Coastal Bend, Jump Starts Harvey Fundraising

After the 'Hand in Hand' concert at the Majestic Theater downtown earlier this month, country legend George Strait promised that it would not be the end of his efforts to help victims of Hurricane Harvey, and today Strait is making good on that promise, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Strait will join Gov. Abbott at a Home Depot in Rockport, and will help efforts to help residents of the Coastal Bend who were hit hard by Harvey's first landfall.

"Its hard to picture in my mind, I've seen pictures, but pictures don't tell the whole story," Strait said.  "You have to go and see it. "

Strait has long time family ties with Rockport, and today he will look at what has become of a community he knows very well.

"If you've been there, you know, its a laid back community, a lot of fishing a lot of partying, and a lot of whatnot," Strait joked.  "A whole lot of whatnot."

Abbott says the rebuilding effort in the Coastal Bend is firmly underway.

"It is going fast, but candidly, not fast enough," Abbott said, pointing out that state crews have remained tons of debris from the streets of the hard hit coastal areas.

Strait recalled watching as Harvey approached the Coastal Bend.

"Watching that storm heading directly to Rockport, I was saying, 'go away'!" he recalled.  "It just kept coming and coming and just wrecked the place, Port Aransas, Aransas Pass, Rockport."
