A neighborhood in west Bexar County was getting the treatment with insecticide today after a mosquoto in the area tested positive for West Nile Virus, the first positive West Nile test this year, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
County spokeswoman Monica Ramos says there is not an elevated danger of residents of the neighborhood off Hunt Ln. and Highway 90 getting the mosquito borne disease, but she says everybody needs to take precautions this time of year.
"We do want people to be extra vigilant, we want them to protect themselves by wearing mosquito repellent at all times when they go out, especially on their children."
Ramos says the area where the mosquito was found was being treated largely because it is near a playground where children congregate.
She says no humans in Bexar County have tested positive for West Nile, or the other mosquito borne disease, Zika Virus.
She says at the height of the mosquito season, any standing water at all should be removed."Include plants, planters, and children's toys," she said.
"Any children's toys that have been left out, they will become breeding grounds for mosquitoes."
Ramos says Bexar County crews routinely spray for insects in drainage areas and other parts of unincorporated Bexar County.
