Robert E. Lee's name is being removed from yet another San Antonio landmark, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
The City's Historic and Design Review Commission is expected to rubber stamp a request from the owner of the 1922 Robert E. Lee Hotel on Travis Street downtown to change the famous red neon sign which has become a landmark on the west edge of the Central Business District.
According to the application, JHM Group wants to change the sign, which for generations has proclaimed: 'HOTEL, ROBT E. LEE, AIR CONDITONED,' to read simply 'HOTEL, ROBT, AIR CONDITIONED.'
The Commission's approval is needed because the building holds landmark status. The application does not indicate whether JHM Group plans to change the name of the building itself, because that would not be required to receive the Commission's approval.
The hotel is located in a part of downtown which has received a lot of upgrades lately, with the new Frost Bank Tower under construction and the major upgrades to San Pedro Creek.
The action comes shortly after the North East ISD voted to remove Lee's name from the high school which was named for him back in 1958.
