A woman whose college student son was shot and permanently crippled in the wave of violence that has gripped the city's east side over the last several days warned the person who shot him to turn himself in, saying, 'my son wants to spare your life, but I on the other hand, don't,' News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
"You know like I know that you shot the wrong person," Adrienne House said. "I want to make your wrong into a right. This is all the way wrong, and we need to make this right."
House joined Police Chief William McManus and East Side Councilman Cruz Shaw today in declaring that the gun violence on the east side which has resulted in six shooting incidents since Sunday 'has to stop now.'
House said her son, who is a student at Prairie View A&M majoring in criminal justice, suffered multiple injuries, including a severed spine, when he was shot on the city's east side early Sunday. He's one of multiple victims of this spike in violence.
"You guys, we have to work something out," House said. "You have children over there who have to walk to school, and we have parents who won't send their children to school now, because the area is just not safe."
McManus said while there are indications that the same vehicles and the same 'known gang members' may be involved in the shootings, but the people involved are 'not talking to police.'
He says for all of the six shooting incidents, the 'motive is unknown.'
"Our detectives are working these cases very hard," McManus said. "We have a lot of resources in those areas on the east side. We actually have additional resources from an additional operation that started yesterday."
He says multiple agencies are working on the crime spike."Its not for lack of resources that these shootings are occuring."
Shaw said he has been in office just two months, and this is the second news conference he has attended to condemn gun violence in the east side."
Enough about words," Shaw said. "Now is the time for action. We take five steps forward and six steps backward due to this crime."
