Hazel the Facility Dog Will Ease Stress for Patients at Methodist Childen's

It will be easier for the little patients and their parents to deal with the stress of being a child at Methodist Children's Hospital, now that Hazel is on the job, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Hazel is a two year old golden retriever, who is trained as the first 'Facility Dog' in a children's hospital in central or south Texas.

"She has been raised in and out of children's hospitals," said Caitlin Pearce, who heads the Child Life department at the hospital."Helping kids cope during procedures, getting out of bed to walk."

She says the calming presence of the dog can help deal with the anxiety that naturally accompanies a child in a hospital setting.  She is also trained to provide canine encouragement to children who are undergoing uncomfortable procedures or physical therapy.

"During difficult times when stress is high and emotions are heightened, to calm the room and calm the families," Pearce said.  "That will be her role here."

Hazel gets a Methodist Children's Hospital employee badge, and even arrived for her first day on the job complete with her lunch box.
