San Antoino Gas Prices Begin Post Harvey Fall

San Antonio gas prices are finally begun a creep downward after skyrocketing during Hurricane Harvey and the gas panic that followed, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

But Daniel Armbruster of AAA Texas says the prices aren't coming down a lot, and still remain sharply elevated from what we were paying before Harvey hit.

"According to the Department of Energy, there are about five refineries on the Gulf Coast that are operating, but they are operating at reduced rates," he said.

The average price of unleaded in San Antonio today is $2.51.  That's compared to a price of $2.15 before the storm arrived.

Armbruster says there is still plenty of refining capacity which is still down along the Gulf Coast.

"There are five refineries that are shut down, and six that are in the process of restarting," he said.  "The restarting process takes up to a week."

He also says damage to the Colonial Pipleline, which carried gasoline to the southeast and mid-Atlantic states, was also damaged by Hurricane Irma, and that will affect our prices as well.

"There is not a gasoline shortage, but instead localized challenges," he said of the 'gas panic' that seized San Antonio two weeks ago.
