In an amazing show of support for their co-workers, 2,000 employees of USAA in San Antonio gathered at the main campus on the northwest side today, to pack up relief supplies for thier 3500 co-workers in Tampa who were hit by Hurricane Irma, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
Executive Vice President Michael Merwarth says USAA volunteers over the weekend gathered up a quarter million dollars worth of critical supplies, from water to canned food and cleaning supplies.
“Over 2,000 volunteers are now coming out here to help load up care packages which we will load on fifteen semi trailers to make the 18 hour drive to Tampa to distribute it to the employees who need it there,” he said.
Merwarth says the fact that thousands of USAA employees are volunteering on their own time to pack up the supplies speaks volumes about the culture of the company
.“It is very inspiring and very humbling to work for a company who cares for its employees and cares for its communities the way USAA does,” he said.
Merwarth says in addition to helping the employees, many of whom have homes that were flooded by Irma, the local USAA workers understand the need to have them back on the job to deal with the job ahead.
“It is going to be tough recovering, in all of Florida, and in Tamps in particular,” he said. “We want to help those employees get back on their feet to help our members, who we know are going to need us as well.”
