Duncan 'Amazed' At San Antonio Support for Virgin Islands Relief

Tim Duncan plans to accompany a chartered plane packed with relief supplies when it leaves for his native Virgin Islands later this week, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Duncan and officials of the San Antonio Food Bank came together on Sunday to appeal for donations for the Virgin Islands, which were hit hard by monster Hurricane Irma as it steamed through the Atlantic on its way to Florida.

“Its pretty decimated, especially in St. Thomas and St. John,” Duncan said.  “St. Croix luckily got off a little easier. But a lot of destruction, a lot of homes down, power is out everywhere.”

H-E-B has made a major contribution to a fund organized by Duncan to help his native Virgin Islands, and H-E-B is also accepting donations for the U.S. Virgin Islands Relief Fund at its stores on Bulverde Road and South New Braunfels today and tomorrow.

Duncan says the people need anything you can spare, because many of his fellow Islanders have lost everything.

“Without electricity down there, we are going to need things that are non perishable, like canned foods and cleaning supplies,” he said.  “A lot of homes are down, so things to sleep on, like cots or tents.”

H-E-B says items which are in need include rice, beans, lentils, flour, sugar, salt, ramen, canned vegetables, canned fruit, peaunut butter, Granola bars, infant formula, diapers, wipes, powered detergents, liquid dish soap and bar bath soap.  Also needed are cleaning supplies like brooms, mops, bleach, and buckets. The chartered flight to the Virgin Islands is set to leave on Thursday.

Duncan says he is amazed at the outpouring of support for the charity effort, with more than 9,000 people responding to his appeal.

"I looked down the list of donors and I recognized many of the names, and there are also a number of people who are giving what they can,” he said.  “I have support from the Spurs, from H-E-B and the Food Bank, it’s just been an amazing response.”to donate cash:  HTTPS://WWW.YOUCARING.COM/21USVIRGINISLANDRELIEFFUND-942738#
