The City will decide this week whether to give a crosswalk north of downtown a little more color, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
In the first City Council work session since the council's annual summer recess to allow city staffers to work on the budget, downtown Councilman Roberto Trevino's proposal to paint the crosswalk at Main and Evergreen, near San Antonio College, in Rainbow colors in recognition of its place as the heart of the LGBT commercial center of the city.
It is also the location of the city's annual Gay Pride Parade."The addition of this crosswalk will provide pedestrian safety while promoting a message of inclusion and tolerance," Trevino said.
The concept of the rainbow crosswalk began in Edmonton Canada in 2015, and has since spread to several American cities, including Atlanta and Houston.
A report on the Edmonton project indicates that acceptance of the rainbow crosswalk has been strong.
"The pilot had multiple positive outcomes, support for a festival and a community, animating of space, testing something new, and contributing to the city's reputation," a city official said.
No word on the cost of the rainbow crosswalk, if any.
