Another shooting this morning involving San Antonio Police Officers, and, fortunately, this time no officers were hurt, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
Police Chief William McManus says it started on W.W. White Rd. on the city's southeast side, when an officer tried to pull over a car that was driving 'erratically,' and was 'all over the road.'
But rather than pulling over, the driver hit the gas and sped away.
McManus says the officer followed policy and didn't chase the driver, instead relaying on a police helicopter to track the car.
"The helicopter got on top of the vehicle and let officers know where this car was registered to," he said.
He says the chopper followed the car all across the city, until he pulled over in the 3300 block of West Woodlawn, which is north of St. Mary's University on the west side.
"When the suspect got out of the car, he began shooting at the officers," McManus said. "The officers returned fire, shooting the victim several times."
None of the officers was hurt.
McManus says three officers opened fire on the suspect. He was rushed to University Hospital where doctors are struggling to save the man's life.
This is the third shooting incident involving San Antonio Police in the last eleven days. One officer remains hospitalized after being shot by a home invasion suspect on Wednesday.
"We've had way way too much of that lately," he said. "Thank God none of the officers was struck."
The officers who opened fire on the suspect are a five year veteran, a four year veteran, and a probationary rookie.
McManus says officers don't know why the man tried to speed away from police.
