A San Antonio Police Officer was shot twice by a suspect in a northwest side home invasion robbery early today, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
Police Chief William McManus says the wounded officer and his partner managed to return fire...hitting the gunman several times and killing him.
McManus says it began about midnight when officers were called to a disturbance at an apartment complex at Ingram and Callaghan, inside Loop 410 on the city's northwest side.
When three officers arrived, they were told the suspects were in a car parked behind the complex.
McManus says when the officers were trying to take the driver into custody he fought back.
"The passenger in the back seat got out of the car with a handgun," McManus said. "He started shooting at the officers."
The officer, a four year veteran of the force, was struck twice, once in the stomach and once in the leg, both below his body armor. But he and another officer returned fire.
The suspect was struck by several shots and was pronounced dead at the scene. The other suspect in the car tried to run away but was chased down and arrested. The driver is also in custody.
McManus says the wounded officer, who was not identified, was undergoing surgery and his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
This has been a particularly tough month for the SAPD. On June 29th, two officers were shot, one fatally, when they were ambushed in a near north side neighborhood.
Just last week, officers shot and killed a domestic violence suspect who pointed a gun at the outside a west side home.
