Look out above...New Braunfels utilities will begin using drones to check out its electricity distribution lines, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
The utility says the work will begin Friday and continue for a week, and it wants to make sure nobody is alarmed by the sight of drones flying over the city.
"Because this is a new approach to electric line inspections, we wante dto alert our customers that this work will be taking place and address any questions tht they may have with regard to the use of drones," NBU Public Affairs Manager Gretcher Reuwer said.
She says the drones will generally fly above public rights of way, and will not fly over homes.
She says Unmanned Aerial Vehicles will be able to safely inspect the status of high voltage lines, even those on fifty foot high towers, and will do it far quicker than a human inspector, who would have to climb up and down on ladders.
"This offers exciting opportunities to aid in NBU's continuing effort to reduce costs, conduct proactive maintenance, increase efficiency, and improve the reliability of our system," Reuwer said.
