City Proposing New Laws to Protect Animals

The new City Council has asked San Antonio Animal Care Services for proposals on new ordinances to become a 'more humane community,' News Radio 1200 WOAI's Megan Bishop reports.

Spokeswoman Lisa Norwood says, following several public meetings, they have come up with several ideas.

"Some issues with animals being sold on the side of the road, animals being sold on Craig's List, animals which have inhumane housing, animals are being tethered overnight," she said.

Among the proposals:

-Banning the use of chains as tethers for dogs

-Banning overnight tethering of dogs completely

-Limiting homes to one rooster without a special city permit

-Authorizing ACS officers to impound pets being sold in illegal locations like roadsides or flea markets, or those without a litter permit.

"What we have been doing is gathering input," Norwood said.  "Looking at what best bractices are, looking at what is happening in other communities to see what they do to address those specific issues."

She says meetings will be held around the city during July and August to determine what the public opinion is about these new proposals, with a potential decision by City Council later this year.
