San Antonio State Rep. Ina Minjarez, who represents a district in the Westover Hills area on the northwest side, today was named the 'Rookie of the Year' in the Texas Legislature by Texas Monthly magazine, News Radio 1200 reports.
Minjarez shepherded 'David's Law,' to fight against high school bullying, through the Texas House and was also a strong voice against SB 4, the controversial measure to outlaw 'Sanctuary Cities.' She was also a leader on foster care reform, and she is known for obtaining major highway projects for her district, including the Loop 410/US 151 interchange which is now under construction.
I am humbled and honored to receive the Rookie of the Year award," Minjarez said on Twitter.
She later added in a statement: " I have always remained loyal to my core values. It is so important to find common ground and reach across the aisle in order to make policy better through thoughtful amendments or to favorably pass our key legislative issues during the session."
Minjarez is an employment attorney.
The magazine also named its Ten Best and Ten Worst lawmakers in the just concluded regular session, and no San Antonio area member made either list.
