Five San Antonio Based Companies on the New Fortune 500

Five San Antonio based firms are in the Fortune 500 ranking of the largest companies in the country, in the 2017 list released today, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Valero Energy Corp is the largest San Antonio based firm, at number 37 on the Fortune 500.  Valero has just under 10,000 employees on revenues of $70 billion, down from 2016.  Valero is the largest independent refiner in North America.

Other San Antonio companies making this year's Fortune 500 are USAA, Tesoro, CST Brands, and iHeart Media.

USAA CEO Stuart Parker said of the ranking, “USAA’s consistent spot  on this list demonstrates our commitment to maintaining the financial  strength to serve our members today and into the future.” 

Texas brags 51 firms on the Fortune 500 this year, third behind California and New York, each with 53.

The largest Texas based company is Exxon Mobil, followed by AT&T and Phillips Energy.  Other prominent Texas based companies on this year's Fortune 500 include Dell, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Whole Foods Markets, J.C. Penney, D. R. Horton, and Gamestop.

The largest company in the country, and the largest privately held corporation in the world in terms of employment, is Arkansas based Walmart.  At $485 billion in revenues, Walmart is more than twice the size of number two, Berkshire Hathaway.  Apple, Exxon Mobil, and McKesson round out the top five.
