Summer Jobs Should be Plentiful as the Last Day of School Approaches

Job Growth Spurs Drop In Unemployment Rate To 4.7 Percent

With school in most area districts ending this week, high school and college students should have good luck finding that summer job, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Texas economist Ray Perryman says the economy is surging, and that means a lot of companies are looking for summer help.

He says it is more than the standard tourism sector jobs which are available.

"There are a lot of internships for kids, especially in the health care area, and there are a lot of jobs in the retail area," Perryman told News Radio 1200 WOAI's Michael Board.

And Perryman says the strong economy, with full employment in San Antonio and many other places around the state, means kids won't be competing with laid off adults for that summer job.

"You always have some competition for jobs, but the situation right now is a lot better than it was a few years ago," he said, pointing out that in 2015 and somewhat in 2016, the oil price crash left a lot of teens competing with laid off adults for summer opportunities.

He says generally, the job market is booming, and that is good news for teens.

Also, the Legislature this past term defeated a proposal to allow school districts to state classes before the fourth Monday in August, which is currently the earliest public schools can start.

Many groups, not just the tourist industry, worried that a move to an earlier start date would damage their ability to retain essential student workers in the summer, and would cost students the opportunity to make money.
