EXCLUSIVE: San Antonio Considering Use of Tax Money to Fund Lawyers for Undocumented Residents

Your tax dollars may wind up fighting the 'Anti Sanctuary City' law approved by the Texas Legislature in several different ways, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Southwest side Councilman Rey Saldana has already freed up some $150,000 to, in part, provide sessions for undocumented immigrants on their rights following approval of the law, which requires communities to cooperate with immigration authorities and threatens jail time for local officials who fail to cooperate.

Also, the City is discussing the possibility of filing a federal lawsuit seeking to overturn the law.

And now, 1200 WOAI News has learned that some at City Hall are proposing that funds be included in the city budget for the fiscal year that begins in October to hire lawyers to represent undocumented residents of San Antonio in potential legal and deportation hearings sparked by the new state law.

The new City Council, which takes office next month, will have the final say on whether tax money is appropriated for this purpose, officials said.
