Fire trucks rolled solemnly up Highway 281 today as thousands of people gathered on the overpasess to wave flags, salute, or solemnly celebrate the life of Scott Deem, the firefighter who was killed battling a four alarm blaze on the northwest side last week, News Radio 1200 WOAI reprots.
Firefighters from more than 100 departments honored Deem by participating in the procession, which began at the Alamodome, and ended at the Community Bible Church on the north side, where a standing room only crowd gathered to honor Deem's heroism and sacrifice.
Deem's coffin was carried past the Alamo and the Tower of the Americas in a separate procession from Porter Loring downtown to the church
"God wants us to come home, to be with him for all eternity," Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller said. "Some he calls home sooner than others."
The Archbishop led the crowd in a prayer to honor Deem.
"Grant him a place in the kingdom," he said.
Mayor Taylor, City Council, and Fire Department officials participated in the funeral.
