The family of Brad Phipps, the San Antonio firefighter who was critically burned in the fire that took the life of fellow firefighter Scott Deem, said today that they express their condolences to Deem's family, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Phipps remains in critical condition suffering from major burns suffered in the fire at the Ingram Square shopping center last week.  He remains under heavy sedation and on a breathing machine.

"Our hope is strong but tempered for Brad," his wife Tina said in a statement.  "He has had the first skin graft surgery of many that will follow and he came through it well.  Brad has a long journey ahead of him, and we are comforted by the knowledge that the entire city is pulling for him and praying for us all."

Phipps joined the Fire Department 13 years ago and was part of Engine 35, the same company as Deem.

Phipps had to be physically prevented from running back into the burning building to save his fellow firefighters, despite being critically injured with major burns.

"He's definitely a fighter," Tina said.  "We are praying to God that Brad's fighting spirit will help him pull through and overcome his injuries.
