Texas Farmers worried about future of NAFTA

Texas farmers are leery of the very real possibility that the North American Free Trade Agreement, which was signed in San Antonio in 1994, may be going away for good.

"Canada and Mexico are our second and third largest export markets behind China," Texas Farm Bureau’s Regan Beck tells Newsradio 1200 WOAI. "Sure, let’s tweak it and look at it, but let’s not do away with it."

This week the Trump administration gave Congress official notice that it plans to renegotiate Nafta.  They now have 90 days to figure out what they want from Mexico and Canada.  On the campaign trail, Trump repeatedly threatened to dismantle the trade deal.  Beck says that would ruin years of work, which has had a huge impact on Texas farmers, simply because of our location.

"From 1994 to 2016, exports to Mexico and Canada increased 288 percent," he explained.

Formal bi-lateral talks will begin this August.
