San Antonio City Tax Money to Benefit Illegal Immigrants

Is this a great country, or what?

Some of a $150,000 'budget adjustment' okayed by San Antonio City Council will allow your property tax money to be used on programs to benefit illegal immigrants, and even to help them avoid the new state law banning 'Sanctuary Cities.,' News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Southwest side Councilman Rey Saldana says the 'contingency dollars' will go to programs to help 'underserved individuals,' from veterans to the homeless.

Some of the money will go to help undocumented immigrants, including sessions dealing with 'legal rights, power of attorney legal clinics, and citizenship application workshops.'

"Earlier this year, I voiced by opposition to the wave of ICE raids using dragnet tactics throughout the country and I traveled to Austin to testify against SB4 (the Sancutary bill)," Saldana said.

"I have publicly denounced the overreach of anti immigration laws and mandates propsed by the State Legislature and the Office of the Governor and reassured all members of our community regardless of their immigration status that they are not alone and the safety of all membes of our city remains a top priority."

Saldana says 'we have the opportunity to provide funding for legal and education services for a very vulnerable community during a time when uncertainty abounds.'

"We must not forget that many of these individuals seeking legal advice are out family members, friends, neighbors, colleagues, and community members, who, in many ways beyond their undocumented status, are law abiding and productive members of society."

Many supports of programs like this point out that it is not against the law for undocumented immigrants to own homes and businesses, and that means they pay property taxes.
