SAPD Detective Marconi Honored at the Wall of Honor for Fallen Officers

The name of Detective Benjamin Marconi today was added to the roll of honor of officers who have died in the line of duty in the 170 year history of the San Antonio Police Department, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Marconi was ambushed and shot as he sat in his patrol car just south of the main downtown police station November 20th.  A suspect is in custody.

"No words can fix what happened," Chief William McManus said.  "Just a hug is all we can do."

As a helicopter flew over and bagpipes played, McManus said this is one of the hardest parts of his job."It gets harder year after year, because there are new faces," McManus said.

58 San Antonio Police Officers have died in the line of duty, dating back to 1857, when Town Marshal Frederick Feieldstrup was killed.

Other than Marconi, the other recent names on the Wall of Honor include Officer Robert Deckard, who was shot to death by a suspect in 2013, Officer Edrees Mukhtar, who was killed a patrol car wreck in 2012, and Officer Stephanie Brown, who was killed by a wrong way driver in 2011.

The Wall of Honor, accompanied by an eternal flame, is located at the SAPD Academy.
