Improvements to flood-prone areas at Port San Antonio are on tap in the coming months. courtesy of voters who last Saturday approved the infrastructure and renovation portion of an $850-million-dollar municipal bond package.
The areas scheduled for drainage work at the southwest-side business park - formerly Kelly Air Force Base - include prime tracts next to the Kelly flight line and acreage adjacent to the facility's railhead, said Paco Fellici, Port San Antonio spokesman.
Fellici says land reclaimed by the drainage projects will attract additional businesses to Port San Antonio, which currently hosts approximately 70 private-sector and governmental tenants employing about 12,000 people. Increased use of the railhead acreage, he said, will allow current and future Port San Antonio tenants to better serve energy, manufacturing retail businesses across South Texas.
In addition to its most visible role as host to aerospace maintenance companies, Port San Antonio boasts a growing cybersecurity presence, including the 24th Air Force.
Plans for the area also include extending 36th Street, Fellici said.
Drainage improvement work is expected to begin in a few months.
